LUSAKA, Zambia – Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) has reaffirmed its commitment to workplace safety after delivering a strong performance at the 19th Inter-Company First Aid Competition, with one of its teams finishing third overall.

The annual competition, hosted by Barrick Lumwana Mining Company Ltd, was held under the theme "First Aid: Where Knowledge Meets Action." The event brought together mining companies from across Zambia to test their emergency response skills, first aid knowledge, and preparedness.

KCM was represented by three teams that qualified for this year's competition, highlighting the company's continued investment in first aid training and emergency response across its operations.

The standout performance came from the KCM Geology Team from the Konkola Business Unit in Chililabombwe, which secured an impressive third-place finish. Lubambe Mine claimed the overall championship, while hosts Barrick Lumwana Mining Company Ltd finished second and fourth.

Speaking during the official opening ceremony, Zambia Chamber of Mines President Anthony Malenga praised first aid responders for the critical role they play in protecting lives in the workplace.

"First aiders are the backbone of every workplace safety program," Malenga said, adding that the ability to respond quickly in emergencies can often mean the difference between life and death.

Representing the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Mines and Minerals Development, Dr. Anthony Chilengi emphasized that safeguarding employees should remain a top priority for the mining industry.

"Our greatest asset remains our people. Protecting their lives must always be our highest priority," he said.

KCM congratulated all its participating teams for their professionalism and dedication throughout the competition, describing their performance as a reflection of the company's strong safety culture.

The mining firm says it remains committed to ensuring that safety remains at the heart of its operations, with the goal of making sure every employee returns home safely after every shift.
