Zambia Under-20 prospects Robert “Sugar Sugar” Banda and James Nene Sibeene are continuing to attract attention from European clubs after delivering impressive performances during an extended trial period in Sweden.
The talented Sporting Lusaka duo have spent the past seven weeks in Sweden, where they have featured in several friendly matches against local opposition as they seek opportunities to secure professional contracts.
Banda has caught the eye with his pace, creativity, and direct attacking play. Last week, the winger registered two assists in his side’s entertaining 4-2 victory, further strengthening his reputation as one of Zambia’s brightest young talents.
Meanwhile, midfielder James Sibeene has also produced standout displays, showcasing maturity well beyond his years. The 18-year-old scored in a 1-1 draw on Sunday, taking his tally to two goals in as many matches while consistently controlling the midfield.
A source following the trials praised both players for their performances.
“Robert Banda is very direct and incredibly quick. If he continues working hard, there’s no reason why he can’t build a successful career in Europe.”
The source reserved special praise for Sibeene’s all-round contribution.
“James was the standout performer. His work rate is unbelievable. One moment he is making tackles in his own half, and seconds later he is arriving in the box to score. He’s an excellent box-to-box midfielder with tremendous energy.”
Sibeene’s performances have also reportedly impressed European scouts.
“James is a very interesting player. It’s rare to see such a naturally composed central midfielder from Africa, especially someone born in 2008. He understands the game so well and plays with remarkable calmness,” a French Ligue 1 scout said after watching one of the friendly fixtures.
This marks Banda’s second trial spell in Sweden. In September last year, he trained with Stockholm-based AIK, where he also spent time alongside Nigerian youngster Zadok Yohanna before the striker completed a reported move to English Premier League club Brighton.
Both Banda and Sibeene represented Zambia at the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Qatar last year and are widely regarded as key members of the country’s next generation of football talent.
Their performances in Sweden continue to raise hopes that another pair of Zambian stars could soon make the leap into European football.
