Hakainde Hichilema
In a compelling address at State House, President Hakainde Hichilema emphasized the integral role of quality education in fostering economic growth. Speaking to a vibrant crowd of University of Zambia (UNZA) students from both the Great East Road and Ridgeway campuses, he highlighted that economic development is unattainable without a solid educational foundation.
During the event, the newly elected University of Zambia Students’ Union (UNZASU) executives for the 2025/2026 academic year were introduced to the President. He congratulated them on their election and urged them to serve with dedication and commitment.
The President articulated his administration’s vision, stating, “This Government values education so much. That is why as we think of economic growth, we know that without education and skills, we cannot deliver economic development.” He further emphasized the importance of equipping students with the necessary skills for crucial sectors such as agriculture and energy, reinforcing the message that “No education, no economy.”
In a show of support for the student body, President Hichilema assured them of ongoing governmental support, saying, “We love you because we understand you. We support you because we understand you.” He also announced the restoration of meal allowances for students, recognizing the essential needs of the student community. The President noted the government’s commitment to addressing accommodation challenges for students and mentioned ongoing efforts to expedite the completion of new hostels. “We found an empty treasury, but because education is a priority, we are working hard to complete the hostels, and this will be an ongoing process as more students enroll,” he added.
Additionally, President Hichilema promised improvements in sanitation at UNZA and the increase of student loans as the economy strengthens. The leadership from both the Great East Road and Ridgeway campuses praised the President for initiatives like the reinstatement of meal allowances and other progressive changes in the education sector.
As the government continues to prioritize education, the call for quality learning opportunities aligns with Zambia’s broader goals for economic advancement and social equity.
