The Zambian government has secured a high-performance training sponsorship for Olympic Bronze Medalist Muzala Samukonga and the 4x400m men’s relay team, recognizing their exceptional achievements at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. This initiative, backed by President Hakainde Hichilema, underscores the government’s commitment to nurturing sports talent and positioning Zambia as a competitive force on the global athletics stage.
Through the Presidential Athlete Support Initiative, Muzala Samukonga and his coach, Douglas Kalembe, will travel to Jamaica on March 26, 2025, to join the rest of the team for specialized training under the guidance of renowned coach Greg Mills. Mills, who has trained legendary athletes such as Usain Bolt, is expected to elevate the performance of the Zambian athletes as they prepare for future international competitions.
This sponsorship aligns with Zambia’s 2024 National Sports Policy, which seeks to develop and support the country’s sports sector by providing world-class training opportunities for elite athletes. The initiative has been made possible through strategic partnerships with the private sector, including Liquid Telecom and Micmar, who have played a pivotal role in funding the program.
Hon. Elvis Nkandu, Minister of Youth, Sport, and Arts, emphasized the importance of this support, highlighting its significance in Zambia’s long-term sports development strategy. “This sponsorship is a game-changer for our athletics program. By investing in our athletes, we are not only ensuring their success but also inspiring a new generation of sports stars,” he stated.
The high-performance training comes at a crucial time as Zambia gears up for the Tokyo World Athletics Championship in September 2025 and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games. With the ‘Goal-2028’ mantra guiding the country’s sports ambitions, this initiative is expected to enhance Zambia’s competitiveness on the world stage.
The government and its partners are calling on more stakeholders to join this effort, ensuring continued investment in Zambia’s athletics development. With sustained support and strategic planning, the nation’s athletes can achieve greater success and bring more glory to Zambia. This move not only boosts sports development but also strengthens Zambia’s reputation in global athletics, attracting more opportunities for young athletes.
