Nestled in the heart of Luapula Province, Zambia, the Ntumbachushi Falls stands as a testament to nature’s awe-inspiring beauty and cultural significance. Located in Mwese District, this enchanting destination is renowned for its stunning series of water pools and rapids that culminate in a breathtaking main waterfall, approximately 30 meters high. The falls are situated on the Ng’ona River, which flows over the edge of the northern Zambian plateau into the valley of the Luapula River.
Historical and Cultural Significance
Ntumbachushi Falls is steeped in historical and cultural lore, which adds to its mystique. The story of the Lunda people’s boundary is particularly captivating. History reveals that Mwata Kazembe Chinyanta Munona VI, a prominent figure among the Lunda, fell in love with his brother’s wife. As a gesture of compensation for the beautiful woman, he gifted his brother the land around Ntumbachushi Falls and beyond. This land became the boundary of the Lunda people, intertwining the region’s natural beauty with its rich cultural heritage.
The falls are also renowned for their spiritual significance. Legend has it that the waters of the Ng’ona River were used to bathe chiefs before their installation on the throne to cleanse them of bad luck and misfortune. This tradition adds a layer of reverence to the already mesmerizing landscape.
A Natural Paradise
The main falls occur where the river splits into two channels, forming two parallel waterfalls, each about 10 meters wide, with a drop of about 30 meters. These falls are separated by a distance of 50 meters and are surrounded by a small patch of relict rainforest, nourished by the spray from the falls. The falls are most spectacular during the rainy season, from November to April, when the water depth can reach up to 1 meter, creating a powerful and mesmerizing cascade. During the dry season, the flow reduces, producing a delicate ‘bridal veil’ effect.
Above and Beyond the Falls
Above the main falls lies a series of smaller falls and pools, stretching over 2 kilometers, creating a landscape often described as one of the most beautiful in central Africa. The area is characterized by unusual vegetation, rocky outcrops, and breathtaking views over the Luapula valley. The water of the Ng’ona River is exceptionally clear, filtered by the wetlands (locally called dambos) from which it drains, offering some of the best river swimming experiences in Zambia.
Exploring Ntumbachushi
The falls are conveniently located 22 kilometers from Mbereshi on the tarred Kawambwa road and are accessible via a 1-kilometer spur that leads to the bottom of the main falls. A steep path on the north side of the main falls ascends over the rocky cliff and continues for half a kilometer to a spot known as ‘the beauty spot.’ Here, visitors can find two pools below a falls approximately 6 meters high and 25 meters wide in two sections. Further above the main falls, there are additional falls with a drop exceeding 5 meters.
Facilities and Activities
For those looking to immerse themselves in nature, Ntumbachushi Falls offers excellent camping facilities and a cottage house. The area is teeming with birdlife, making it a paradise for bird watchers. The falls also feature a play park for kids, making it an ideal family-friendly destination.
